Michelle Murphy
Method Acting in Fog

Make a list of all your excesses

then consider which side of the glass

you drink from.

The obvious is

without translation.

I use whatever is in reach to lean on.

Without syllables she enters

the day muttering.

Nothing like   nothing

redolent with promise

but a same wound striking

over and against

the practice of her weight.

There is more to an alphabet

than meets the mirror.

What appears to be a letter.

Sticks in her throat.

Who looks out their window

watches roots grow dark? Who takes

the first rejection and all morning breathes

it out & in. Ripping up rugs

and punching the dust

until it flies.
